Platform21: “Joyriding”

Oh man, these Dutch people are crazy! Yesterday was the first evening with Platform21, that you may know for their ever-clever and often hilarious interactive workshops. “Joyriding” was no exception to the rule, and watching all the guests building and shaping their own styrofoam cars and then enter the race really was one of the highlights of Cube Store’s events. Unhappily, your favorite blogger’s car was completely dysfunctional and out of control and was forced to forfeit (watch the blank space in the time column below, you’ll see what I mean). Well, after all, let’s quote Pierre de Coubertin: “L’important, c’est de participer”.

Yazbukey

Have you ever seen a living mirror ball? If you were at Cube Store yesterday, you sure have. Yazbukey’s performance consisted on a couple of models dressed in black American Apparel clothes, covered with brooches, and spinning on themselves over a white carpet. Disco dizziness, jewels that turn heads, that’s what Yaz & Emel, the two sisters behind Yazbukey, can do. We’ve asked the first one to answer our ‘sisters’ questions:

Who are your favorite famous sisters?

Zsa Zsa and Eva Gabor

Which one of you borrows the other one’s clothes/jewelry?

Rule number 1: Never share our clothes or our jewelry!

If you could do anything, what would you offer your sister for Chistmas?

I would offer… Wait… Let me ask her!

Which one of these records would you choose: “Sister” by Sonic Youth or “First And Last And Always” by The Sisters of Mercy?

“First And Last And Always” by the Sisters Of Mercy, of course.

Below is the report in full colours, with the wonderful pictures of our new guest photographer Julien Weber.

Tokyoïte Cinéma #1

How to chill out on a sweet saturday night:

1- put a bunch of your softest cushions on the floor

2- cook some scrumptious pizzas

3- invite your friends

4- welcome them with fresh Champagne

5- let your guests take place on the soft cushions

6- unroll your giant screen and show them one of your favorite movies (an old japanese masterpiece if possible)

Or simply come to Cube Store for the next Tokyoite Cinema evening, because that’s exactly what happens there on saturday evenings.

Irina Shaposhnikova

Irina is one of the greatest newcomers in fashion design. Just like the inspiring show she has put up for the Cube Store, her answers to our questions reflect her humor and creativity. For your eyes only, here is a special “geometry” interview:

What is the general idea behind your ‘Crystallographica’ collection?

The collection explores the link between the geometry and shape of the female bodyform and the creation of new shapes. It is inspired by geological formation of crystals and minerals. I was interested in the shape and cut of the stones and tried to recreate it in the garments.

If you had to draw a diagonal line between your two strongest influences, what/who would they be?

I am very much influenced by the process of creation. I like to collect things: visual objects, pictures, mood, impression, experiences. As visuals, I am often influenced by Moden Art because its perception is very personal and it leaves a wide space for analizing and re-thinking. Also I am very interested in the unknown and the new.

According to you, how many sides has the perfect polygon?

According to me it has too many sides, but I still didn’t find the perfect one.

Which song  would you chose between New Order’s “Bizarre Love Triangle” and Al Corley’s “Square Room”?

I love ‘Bizarre Love Triangle’ from New Order! It is one of my favourites.

As a fashion designer, what does it take not to be square?

It takes freedom of expression which can at times be shoking, tempting or astounding. I see fashion as a form of expression of the emotions of our times.

The opening with Ghostcat live

This very first evening was a blast. Colourful guests in the uncuttered space downstairs would spin around a UFO car, while music was making the people come together on the first floor. Coming from outer space, surrounded by red lasers, Ghostcat left the crowd astonished. Singer Ali Cat, somehow recalling a third kind Karen O, took full advantage of the spectral lights to add a little mystery to her feline moves. Jean-Michel Bertin’s clear-cut scenography and I Could Never Be A Dancer’s full effect choregraphy were like the perfect chemistry.

WHAT REALLY HAPPENED?

We were there, you were there too: the whole story’s coming tomorrow morning, with coffee and croissants.
